Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the July Movement created a vital opportunity for Bangladesh to return to a democratic system.
He made the remarks while commemorating the nation’s Independence and National Day.
The minister offered wreaths and recited Fatiha at the graves of former presidents Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia in a ceremony held on Thursday. Speaking at the event, he recalled the struggles of the Liberation War martyrs and the challenges faced during the past 15–16 years.
“This year, we are celebrating Independence Day in a different context. During the past 15–16 years, when freedom was threatened under fascist rule, the BNP led the people in struggle and resistance,” he said.
Mirza Fakhrul also praised Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, noting that “returning from 15–16 years of exile, he is now striving to rebuild the country with fresh ideas. Under his leadership, the nation has made remarkable progress in just one month.”
By highlighting the July Movement, the minister emphasised its significance in restoring Bangladesh’s democratic governance and empowering the people to reclaim their political rights.
