BNP Secretary General and Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for a political environment based on tolerance, fairness and democratic values, saying all political parties should be allowed to operate freely and present their views before the people.
“We want a beautiful, fair, tolerant and liberal political culture in the country. Every political party should have the opportunity to carry out its activities and express its opinions.
The people will decide whom they want to elect,” he said while addressing a civic reception at Kumarpur High School in Thakurgaon ground on Wednesday afternoon.
Thanking voters for their support, Mirza Fakhrul said he was elected with an overwhelming mandate and expressed gratitude to people across political affiliations.
He described the region as one with a proud history of movements for democracy, rights and social justice.
The BNP leader said the sacrifices of the heroes of the 1971 Liberation War must never be forgotten and highlighted the area’s contribution to various democratic and student-led movements.
He also criticised the previous government, alleging that BNP leaders and activists had faced political repression and harassment for years. He accused the former administration of undermining democratic institutions and damaging the country’s economy.
Referring to the recent election, Mirza Fakhrul claimed that the vote was conducted fairly and reflected public confidence in the BNP and its Chairman Tarique Rahman.
He said the party had secured a strong electoral mandate.
Urging party leaders and activists to act responsibly, he said the trust placed in the BNP by voters carries greater responsibility.
He stressed that public service and accountability must remain the party’s priority.
District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin, leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliated organisations, as well as representatives of various social and cultural groups, attended the event.
Earlier, Mirza Fakhrul inaugurated the temporary office of the Bhully Upazila Executive Officer.
