Mahir Sarwar Megh, the son of murdered journalist couple Sagor Sarwar and Meherun Runi, met with Attorney General Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal on Wednesday to inquire about the progress of the long-pending murder case.
The meeting was held at the Attorney General’s office, attended by Runi’s brother Nowshar Ali Roman and lawyer Shishir Monir.
“We are asked by many about the investigation. We cannot give any answer. We don’t know what is happening,” Megh told the Attorney General.
Runi’s brother Nowshar Ali Roman said, “People say justice will not be served. Only those families who have suffered from impunity can truly understand this pain. No one else can.”
The attorney general informed them that the current investigating officer cannot trace the original IO or the RAB and police personnel who worked on the case initially. The IO has spoken with the building guard, who is in jail, and with Megh, and has said all aspects are being investigated.
Lawyer Shishir Monir said an application seeking a progress report will be filed in court on Sunday. Earlier, on 26 April, the High Court granted another six months to the task force investigating the case.
On 30 September 2024, the High Court ordered RAB’s removal from the investigation and the formation of a high-level task force under the Home Ministry. Subsequently, a four-member task force was formed, headed by an Additional Inspector General of Police and the chief of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).
On the night of 11 February 2012, Sagar Sarwar, news editor of Maasranga Television, and Meherun Runi, senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were brutally murdered in their rented house in West Rajabazar. Their mutilated bodies were recovered the next morning.
Runi’s brother filed a murder case on 12 February 2012. The investigation was initially handled by local police, then transferred to Detective Branch, and later to RAB following a High Court order. To date, no investigation report has been submitted.
In 2012, Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh filed a public interest writ petition. The High Court issued a rule seeking to know why the killers should not be identified and brought to justice. Subsequently, upon a separate application, the investigation was transferred to RAB. The case remains unresolved after more than 14 years.
