A court in Dhaka on Wednesday placed three accused on three-day remand in a case filed over vandalism, looting and theft at a New Gini Properties Ltd project near ECB Chattar.
The court also sent three accused, including Mizanur Rahman, son-in-law of Jamaat-e-Islami MP Abdul Gafur, to jail after they completed their remand.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ismail passed the order, said Prosecution Department Sub-Inspector Tarek-ur Rahman.
The two others sent to jail are Aslam and Shah Alam Anik. The three placed on remand are Mamun, Munna and Shahriar Mahmud.
Investigation officer Inspector Zehad Hossain of the Detective Branch’s Gulshan Zonal Team produced the six accused before the court. He sought to keep Mizanur Rahman, Aslam and Shah Alam Anik in jail and sought seven-day remand for Mamun, Munna and Shahriar Mahmud.
State counsel Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon said the defence sought cancellation of the remand and bail for the three accused, while also seeking bail for the other three.
“The state opposed the petitions. After hearing both sides, the court granted three-day remand for three accused and rejected the bail pleas of the other three, sending them to jail,” he said.
Last Thursday, the court had granted three-day remand to Mizanur Rahman, Aslam and Shah Alam. A day earlier, on Wednesday, Mamun, Md Aslam and Md Munna were also placed on three-day remand.
In the same case, the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested retired Major General Golam Mahiuddin Chowdhury from a house in Segunbagicha under Ramna Police Station at around 2:45pm last Wednesday.
The following day, a court granted him three-day remand. He was granted bail on Sunday.
The incident took place on the night of 26 September when New Gini Properties in South Manikdi, near ECB Chattar, was attacked and vandalised and valuables were looted. The ‘Brownfish’ studio of content creator Salman Muqtadir, located inside the housing project, was also attacked.
Saiful Islam Bhuiyan, a director of New Gini Properties, filed the case with Cantonment Police Station.
The case names 13 people as accused, including retired Major General Golam Mahiuddin Chowdhury. Another 150 to 200 people were made accused without specific identities.
Police said a dispute over possession of land has initially emerged as a possible reason behind the incident. However, the specific cause will be confirmed after the investigation.
