Meta’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, have begun returning to normalcy following a widespread service disruption that affected users in Bangladesh and across the world.
The sudden global outage took place after 7:30pm on Friday, leaving millions of users disconnected from these platforms.
The outage caused significant disruption to communication, business operations, and the consumption of daily news. Meta’s services began to become operational again after approximately 45 minutes.
According to the real-time outage monitoring website “DownDetector,” as well as reports from News.az and ‘LADbible’, the disruption began extremely abruptly. Within minutes, service monitoring sites were flooded with a surge of complaints.
Users were suddenly kicked out of apps without any prior warning. Those active on Facebook and Messenger were unexpectedly logged out; attempts to log back in resulted in error messages such as “Unexpected error occurred” or “This page is not available right now.”
Simultaneously, Instagram users encountered the message “Something went wrong” on both the mobile app and the website, and news feeds failed to refresh. WhatsApp users experienced intermittent connection issues, which hindered the normal sending and receiving of messages.
As Meta does not maintain a public status dashboard for live updates regarding its general applications, confused users flocked to alternative social media platforms like ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) to check on the situation.
Meta has not yet released any official information regarding the cause of the disruption
