The idea is that a few simple stretches and massage techniques can transform your face over time. At its core, face yoga is a blend of facial exercises and massage practices that target the muscles in your face. The goal is to tone and firm up those muscles, boost blood circulation, ease tension and improve overall skin elasticity.
Like regular yoga, face yoga involves deliberate movement, combined with breathing, designed to activate facial muscles. A few studies have shown that regular facial exercise can improve facial muscle tone and give the skin a plumper, youthful look. It helps minimise wrinkles and soften lines around your mouth or eyes.
Some instructors recommend face yoga to help maintain results, especially the massage part. Lymphatic drainage techniques can reduce swelling and improve circulation around the areas that have been treated. Although certain exercises might slightly counteract Botox in particular, especially if they’re activating the exact muscles the injections are meant to relax.
There are more than 70 face yoga moves that target different areas of your face, from your forehead down to your neck. Most people focus on the areas they want to work on, maybe lifting their cheeks, smoothing out forehead lines or firming up the jaw.
Some classic exercises include:
Fish Face: Puff out your cheeks and push the air side to side to engage the muscles.
Cheek Push-Up: Make an “O” with your mouth, cover your teeth with your lips, and smile. This lifts the cheek area.
Jawline Tightener: Open your mouth in an “ahh,” pull your lower lip and corners in, jut your jaw out, then tilt your head back slowly.
Chin Lift: Tilt your head back, overlap your lower lip with your upper, smile, and engage the neck muscles.
Eyebrow Resistance: Place your fingertips under your eyebrows to lift them slightly, then try to push your brows downward.
De-Puff Eyes: Stretch the skin near your temples, then blink slowly and deliberately to tone the under-eye area.
Eye Rolls: Move your eyes up, down and side to side to strengthen the surrounding muscles, besides a little massage around the eyes.
Forehead Smoothing: Use the edges of your palms to gently rub the forehead in alternating motions to relax tension and reduce lines.
Face yoga might not be a miracle cure for ageing, but it’s a low-effort, zero-cost way to support your skin and become more in tune with how you carry stress on your face. The key is consistency and the willingness to look a little silly in the mirror now and then.
