The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against Bangladesh Railway’s former director general Md Shamsuzzaman and two other officials over the embezzlement of Tk1.36 crore and causing financial loss of Tk322.68 crore of the state, ACC officials said.
The other officials are former additional director general Manjurul Alam Chowdhury and Mohammad Hasan Mansur.
“Through fraud and forgery to benefit themselves, they violated tender specifications and the executed purchase agreement for 10 meter-gauge locomotive engines,” said a press release.
The accused allegedly altered certain capital components of the locomotives, falsely presented the engines as compliant with specifications and contract requirements without obtaining the mandatory Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI) certificates.
They accepted the engines as correct without consulting the appointed supervising authority, despite the purchased locomotive parts not meeting the contractual specifications, it added.
“They misappropriated Tk1.36 crore and caused a financial loss of Tk322.68 crore to the government through the purchase of substandard locomotive engines,” read the press release.
It said these acts constitute punishable offenses under Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act 1947.
