A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed retired lieutenant general Masud Uddin Chowdhury on a four-day remand in connection with the murder of Delowar Hossain in the capital’s Mirpur area during July uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Monirul Islam passed the order after a hearing, partially granting a seven-day remand plea filed by the investigation officer, Detective Branch Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin.
According to the prosecution, preliminary findings have revealed sufficient evidence of the accused’s involvement in the killing. Investigators told the court that custodial interrogation is essential to uncover the motive and identify other suspects involved in the incident.
Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqi confirmed that no defence counsel appeared for the accused during the hearing.
During proceedings, the court informed Masud Uddin Chowdhury that evidence of his involvement had emerged in the investigation. In response, he denied the allegations, stating that he had no knowledge of the incident and had been falsely implicated. He also remarked that “judgment rests with God” after the order was issued.
According to the case documents, Delowar Hossain joined the anti-discrimination student protest on 19 July, 2024, in the Mirpur-10 area. Assailants opened fire from multiple directions, leaving protester Delowar Hossain critically injured.
He was first taken to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases and later shifted to a private hospital in Shyamoli, where he died on 21 July while undergoing treatment.
The victim’s wife, Mosammat Liza, filed a murder case with Mirpur Model Police Station on 6 July, 2025.
Earlier, Masud Uddin Chowdhury had been remanded for a total of 14 days in three phases in a separate case filed with Paltan Model Police Station over allegations of embezzlement of Tk24,000 crore and human trafficking.
He was detained from Dhaka’s Baridhara area on 23 March this year. The court subsequently granted a five-day remand, followed by a six-day extension on 29 March and a further three days on 4 April.
Investigations into both cases are ongoing.
