Former Janata Bank chairman and retired Dhaka University professor Abul Barkat has secured bail in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court accepted his bail petition on Monday.
Lawyers said there is now no legal bar to his release from jail following the court order.
However, the Appellate Division imposed a condition requiring him to submit his passport to the court.
The ACC filed the case over allegations of irregular loans to the AnonTex Group and misappropriation of Tk2,970 crore during his tenure as Janata Bank chairman.
The case was filed on 20 February last year, naming 23 people as accused. Following the case, law enforcement arrested him from Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area on 10 July last year, and he has remained in custody since then.
Abul Barkat is a former chairman of the Department of Economics at the University of Dhaka and also served for a long time as president of the Bangladesh Economic Association.
He was appointed chairman of state-owned Janata Bank during the previous Awami League government.
