A court on Tuesday evening sent Abdul Wahed, a former leader of Jamaat-e-Islami and director of Al-Aqaba Multipurpose Cooperative Society, to jail in connection with eight cases, including the embezzlement of approximately Tk400 crore.
Wahed, 55, who had been an absconding accused with multiple warrants against him, was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-14 on Tuesday afternoon from the Bypass area of Jamalpur city.
Following his arrest, he was handed over to Madarganj Police Station and subsequently produced before the court, which ordered his imprisonment.
According to sources, the Al-Aqaba Multipurpose Cooperative Society allegedly conducted unauthorised banking activities, through which it defrauded customers of nearly Tk400 crore.
In 2025, affected customers filed cases against the society’s directors at Madarganj Model Police Station, accusing them of fraud and money laundering. Wahed is named as an accused in a total of eight such cases.
Jamalpur RAB-14, CPC-1 Company Commander Major Labid Ahmed said the operation was conducted based on a tip-off and with the assistance of information technology.
Regarding his political affiliation, Zakiul Islam, the District Jamaat Publicity and Media Secretary, confirmed that Abdul Wahed was the former ameer of Madarganj Upazila Jamaat.
He clarified that Wahed had been expelled from the organisation after the allegations of embezzlement first surfaced.
