The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested Lieutenant General (retired) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, the former director general of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI).
He was detained from his residence in Mirpur DOHS late Wednesday night and subsequently taken to the DB office on Mintu Road in the capital.
Mohammad Nasirul Islam, joint commissioner of the DB, confirmed the arrest at approximately 1:45am. However, the specific case or charges under which he was detained have not been immediately disclosed.
Records show that on May 22 last year, the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court imposed a travel ban on the retired Lieutenant General and his wife, Nigar Sultana Khaled.
Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib issued the order following two separate applications filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The travel ban also extended to Tax Commissioner Abu Sayeed Md Mustaque and Khandaker Abul Kaiyum, who is the brother-in-law of Major General TM Jobayer, the former director general of the National Security Intelligence (NSI).
