AHM Abdul Baten, widely known as Hossain Molla, has died of cardiac failure at the age of 70.
He passed away on Sunday after spending weeks in hospitals with multiple health complications.
Molla, a long-time resident of Shahjadpur in Dhaka, was originally from Chhotna village in Mohonpur Union under Debidwar Upazila of Cumilla.
He served as the elected chairman of Mohammadpur Union for nearly 13 years between 1990 and 2010.
His public service was recognised with multiple awards.
The youngest son of eminent Islamic teacher and Imam Abdur Rahman, Molla is survived by two daughters, a son, five grandchildren and extended family members.
His first namaz-e-janaza was held at a mosque in Shahjadpur on Sunday night.
A second prayer was held in his home village before he was laid to rest in the family graveyard.
