After seven years, three seasons and 26 episodes, HBO has officially confirmed that ‘Euphoria’ has come to an end, closing the chapter on one of the most influential television dramas of recent years.
The announcement was made by creator, writer and director Sam Levinson during an appearance on Popcast, the music podcast of The New York Times. HBO subsequently confirmed the decision to Variety.
The final episode of season three, titled ‘In God We Trust’, now stands as the series finale.
The news is not unexpected. Lead actor Zendaya had previously indicated in interviews that she believed the show would conclude after its third season. Industry observers had also long questioned the possibility of further instalments, particularly after a four-year gap between the second and third seasons.
During that period, many of the show’s principal cast members became major international stars, balancing increasingly busy schedules with film and television commitments. Production on the third season faced significant delays, a situation that had been widely reported in previous years.
Speaking before the premiere of the third season, Levinson suggested that he approached each instalment as though it could be the last.
“I write every season like it’s the last,” he said, while declining to commit to the possibility of a fourth season.
As described by HBO, ‘Euphoria’ followed “a group of high school students as they navigate drugs, sex, identity, trauma, social media, love and friendship”. The third season introduced a time jump and saw its characters “wrestle with the virtue of faith, the possibility of redemption and the problem of evil”.
Led by Zendaya, the ensemble cast featured Hunter Schafer, Eric Dane, Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Demie, Maude Apatow, Martha Kelly, Chloe Cherry, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Toby Wallace and Colman Domingo.
Since its debut, ‘Euphoria’ has become one of HBO’s most discussed and culturally significant series, generating widespread attention for its storytelling, performances and visual style. The programme also helped elevate several cast members into international stardom.
