BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has said that the horrific era of enforced disappearances and killings has come to an end.
He made the comment on Saturday at a discussion with families of the victims of enforced disappearances, killings, and torture. The event was organised by Amra BNP Poribar and Mayer Dak at the Bangladesh‑China Friendship Conference Centre in the capital.
Tarique said, “BNP leaders and activists have not assumed any hidden or covert guise in the name of strategy, so conspiracies against the party will bring no benefit.
“We are witnessing the controversial role of the Election Commission recently, but in the interest of democracy, as a responsible political party, we want to show patience,” he said.
Some are creating obstacles to the transition toward democracy under various pretexts. They must not be allowed to succeed, and everyone must remain vigilant, he added.
He also said, “I had to remain away for many years, but even from afar I tried to stand by those who lost their loved ones. There was no lack of sincerity, and there will be no lack of effort to stand by them in the future.”
Tarique further said, “During the anti‑fascist movement, 1,50,000 cases were filed. Around 6,00,000 leaders and activists were accused and forced to leave their homes. That situation has now ended, and the country has begun its journey toward democracy.
