Dr Tasnim Jara, senior joint member secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has said the era of cronyism is over, and politics in Bangladesh has entered a new phase.
She made the remarks on Saturday while taking part in a dialogue organised by the Centre for Governance Studies (CGS), aimed at fostering ideological discussions and promoting democratic practices among politicians.
Referring to the July Charter’s recommendation on the Health Commission report, Tasnim Jara said there is no mention of who will implement it.
“Nothing can be achieved without taking to the streets. Movements and hunger strikes have long been the only tools for realising demands and that needs to change,” she added.
“It is our responsibility to ensure that young people can participate in politics in a healthy and positive environment. We had proposed lowering the voting age to 16.
‘‘Without structural changes, such proposals will remain only in words. Several countries have already allowed voting at the age of 16,” Tasnim said.
Tasnim also emphasised the need to include women who played leading roles in mass uprisings in mainstream politics.
