The carcass of an elephant has been recovered from a forest in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar, with blood found coming out of its mouth.
Locals spotted the dead elephant on Wednesday morning in Rafique’s Ghona area under Dochhari of the Ukhiya Range’s Sadar beat.
Confirming the matter to reporters on Thursday, Abdul Mannan, Ukhiya Range officer of Cox’s Bazar South Forest Division, said the exact cause of death would be determined after the post-mortem report.
Imdadul Hasan Roni, beat officer of Dochhari, said a forest department team rushed to the spot after being informed by locals and found the elephant lying dead on the northeastern side of Rafique’s Ghona canal. “Blood was gushing out of its mouth at the time,” he said.
He added that a veterinary surgeon from the livestock office conducted the autopsy around 2 pm the same day, while collected samples were sent to a laboratory for testing.
The forest department later buried the elephant’s body, the official said.
