A mobile court fined Habibur Rahman Habib, representative of NCP Chief Organiser (Northern Region) Sarjis Alam, Tk5,000 for violating the electoral code of conduct during a campaign in Panchagarh’s Tetulia on Wednesday.
The fine was imposed by Executive Magistrate and Tetulia Upazila Assistant Commissioner (land) SM Akash after Habib was found using loudspeakers during a rally around 8:30pm.
Sarjis, also the 11-party alliance candidate for the Panchagarh-1 constituency, along with Jamaat-e-Islami district unit Ameer Iqbal Hossain, police officials, and members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were present at the time.
The incident occurred when Sarjis was addressing a rally using loudspeakers in Buraburi Bazar after 8pm. Later, the mobile court fined his representative, Habib, for violating Section 17(2) of the electoral code of conduct.
The campaigners were also warned to use loudspeakers only within the permitted hours during future events.
Executive Magistrate SM Akash said, “Anyone violating the rules is being fined accordingly. On Wednesday night, the 11-party alliance leaders were cautioned to remain aware of the code of conduct.”
Habib said, “As we respect the law, we paid the fine in cash. From now on, we will use loudspeakers strictly within the designated hours in compliance with the electoral code.”
