Police have arrested a 72-year-old man in Satkhira’s Debhata upazila following allegations of raping a teenage girl.
The accused, Abdur Razzak of Bohera village in the upazila, was arrested from his home on Wednesday night, police said.
According to the case statement, the survivor is a neighbour of the accused and had allegedly been subjected to physical and sexual abuse by him for a long period.
After the incident became known, the girl’s family filed a written complaint with Debhata Police Station on 4 March.
Police launched an investigation following the complaint and arrested the suspect the same night after finding evidence supporting the allegation. Authorities said previous allegations had also been raised against Abdur Razzak over physical abuse of the teenager’s mother and her disabled sister.
“The accused was arrested immediately after receiving the complaint and conducting a raid,” said Debhata Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zakir Hossain.
He said the suspect was sent to jail through the court on Thursday morning.
Quoting the arrested man, the officer added that he admitted the allegations during initial interrogation.
The survivor has undergone a medical examination, the police official said.
