Chattogram Metropolitan Police have arrested eight individuals in connection with the murder of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activist Md Sajjad during a clash over banner hanging on Baklia Access Road in Chattogram.
The arrestees are Sabuj Islam Miraj, 24; Saidul Islam, 20; Emran Hossain Sagor, 30; Jihan, 22; Tamjidul Islam alias Saju, 47; Arafat, 22; Osman, 28; and Didarul Alam Russell. Six of them were named in the First Information Report (FIR).
Bakalia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ikhtiar Uddin said the eight were arrested for their alleged involvement in the murder of Sajjad, the JCD activist who died in the incident. They were produced before the court on Tuesday.
According to police and local sources, the clash broke out around 2am on Monday (27 October) in the Bogarbil area of Bakalia Access Road after an argument erupted between two groups of Jubo Dal over putting up a banner featuring the photo of Chattogram City Corporation Mayor and BNP city unit President Shahadat Hossain.
The dispute escalated when one group attempted to remove the banner, triggering a chase and counter-chase followed by gunfire between the two sides.
JCD activist Sajjad was shot dead on the spot, while at least 13 others sustained injuries.
The following day, Sajjad’s father filed a murder case with Bakalia Police Station, naming 17 accused and listing another 35 to 40 unidentified persons.
Those named in the FIR include Mohammad Borhan Uddin, 29; Nazrul Islam Sohel, 42; Milton, 44; Badsha alias Chhoto Badsha, 30; Yusuf alias Hiron, 25; Sabuj Islam Miraj, 24; Saidul Islam, 20; Emran Hossain Sagor, 30; Mohammad Didar, 45; Riaz Karim, 33; Jihan, 22; Tamjidul Islam alias Saju, 47; Arafat, 22; Borhan alias Chhoto Borhan, 25; Mojaher Member, 50; Ehteshamul Haque Bhola, 50; and Naim Uddin, 24.
OC Ikhtiar Uddin said police launched an immediate operation after the incident and conducted drives across different parts of the city to arrest the suspects.
