The process of bringing back ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who was convicted in domestic court, to Bangladesh is underway, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed said on Wednesday.
She made the remarks while speaking to journalists at the Foreign Ministry.
“The government is working towards this because the people of Bangladesh want to see the convict face justice for the many crimes and offences she committed,” Obayed said.
Sheikh Hasina fled to New Delhi on August 5, 2024. Since then, both the interim government and the subsequent BNP government have sent formal requests to India seeking her return.
Laundered money
The government is also working to recover money laundered abroad through bilateral agreements, with negotiations currently in progress, the state minister said.
“The government believes it has moved a step forward in the recovery process by establishing agreements with the governments of the countries where the money was transferred,” she said.
According to Obayed, discussions with the relevant foreign governments are ongoing to facilitate the return of the funds to Bangladesh.
“The recovery process follows established mechanisms, rules and regulations. It is a time-consuming matter and cannot be accomplished overnight,” she added.
