The Election Commission has postponed the 8th National Voter Day, which was scheduled to be observed on Monday, 2 March.
In a letter issued on Thursday, the commission directed the central celebration committee and its field-level offices to suspend all programmes related to the day until further instructions.
Election Commission Director Public Relations Ruhul Amin Mollik said the programmes were deferred due to by-elections in Bogura-6 and Sherpur-3 constituencies and inadequate preparation to hold a colourful celebration during the holy month of Ramadan.
He said the day is likely to be observed nationwide after Ramadan.
The commission sent the directive to the convener of the central celebration committee, regional election officers and upazila or thana election officers.
Earlier, the commission had decided to observe National Voter Day 2026 in the capital, divisional cities, district towns and upazila headquarters across the country.
The theme for this year was fixed as “Empowered Voters, Liberated Democracy”.
National Voter Day was introduced in 2019 following a Cabinet Division notification issued on 8 April 2018.
However, on 15 January 2020, the cabinet issued a fresh notification cancelling the previous one and fixing 2 March each year for the observance instead of 1 March.
