The Election Commission (EC) on Monday disposed of 24 appeals related to nomination papers for the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election, cancelling seven candidatures, approving 15, and keeping two under consideration.

The hearings were held in the first session of the third day of appeal proceedings at the EC auditorium in Agargaon.

During the hearings, the EC cancelled the nomination of Gono Odhikar Parishad candidate Dinmoy Rwaza in the Khagrachhari constituency due to outstanding credit card dues of Tk22,700.

In Chattogram-11, the nomination of Gono Odhikar Parishad candidate Muhammad Nezam Uddin was scrapped over loan default liabilities amounting to Tk97,991.

In Chattogram-9, the candidature of Jamaat-e-Islami nominee AKM Fazlul Haque was cancelled on grounds of dual citizenship.

The EC also rejected the nomination of independent candidate Md Ismail in Feni-2 for failing to secure the mandatory one per cent voter support.

NPP candidate GA Mubbin from Natore-2 was disqualified as three years had not elapsed since his release from government service, in violation of electoral rules.

Meanwhile, the appeal of independent candidate Shakila Farzana in Chattogram-5 was marked as “not pressed.”

The commission kept its decision pending on the appeal of Jatiya Party candidate SM Abdul Mannan from Manikganj-2 due to unresolved issues related to loan default.

The appeal of Gano Forum candidate Sheikh Nasir Uddin from Pabna-2 was also kept pending as the hearing was deferred.
