Eastern Bank (EBL) PLC said it will support the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society to upgrade selected Mother and Child Health (MCH) centres, marking a new step in private sector‑led healthcare support for underserved communities.

A memorandum of understanding was signed at Eastern Bank’s head office in Dhaka, where Eastern Bank Head of Administration Maj Md Abdus Salam psc (Retd) handed over a cheque to Dr Kabir M Ashraf Alam ndc, Secretary General of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), to launch the project.

Under the 12‑month initiative, titled “Improving Mother and Child Health Service Provision,” Eastern Bank will help strengthen the functionality of four BDRCS MCH centres in Kishoreganj, Narsingdi, Brahmanbaria and Dinajpur. Many of these centres serve rural, remote and disaster‑prone communities with limited access to quality healthcare.

The project is expected to benefit about 15,000 people, including mothers, children and elderly residents, by upgrading infrastructure, enhancing sanitation and water facilities, installing essential diagnostic equipment, and providing regular medical support from qualified physicians, including general practitioners and gynaecology specialists.

The signing ceremony was attended by Areefa Mehera Sinha, Director of International Relations, Communications and Fundraising at BDRCS, and Dr Shahana Zafor, Director of the BDRCS Blood Programme, along with officials from both organisations.

BDRCS currently operates 56 Mother and Child Health centres that serve approximately 1.4 million people across Bangladesh, offering basic health services in areas where formal healthcare can be difficult to access.

The collaboration with Eastern Bank highlights a growing trend of corporate engagement in community health initiatives in Bangladesh, as financial institutions seek to broaden their social impact beyond traditional philanthropic activities.
