A Dhaka court on Sunday granted a three-day remand for Sudip Chakraborty, an associate professor of Theatre and Performance Studies department at Dhaka University (DU), in a case filed over the death of student Munira Mahjabin Mimo.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Monjurul Islam passed the order after a hearing. The matter was confirmed by Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon, the additional public prosecutor of the Court.
Earlier, the investigation officer of the case, Sub-Inspector (SI) Kazi Iqbal Hossain of Badda Police Station, produced the accused before the court with a prayer for a three-day remand.
During the hearing, the state presented arguments in favour of the remand, while the defence lawyers moved a petition seeking bail. After hearing from both sides, the court granted the three-day remand.
According to case documents, Mimo, a student of the 2019-20 academic session at Dhaka University, lived with her family in the capital’s Badda area.
Last Sunday morning, she was rescued in an unconscious state from her room and taken to a hospital, where the attending physician declared her dead.
Police reported recovering a note from the scene, which reportedly mentioned personal issues and financial transactions.
Following the incident, the victim’s father, Mohammad Golam Mostafa, filed a case at Badda Police Station alleging abetment to suicide. Following the filing of the case, police arrested Associate Professor Sudip Chakraborty and produced him in court, where he was initially sent to jail.
