The Department of Theatre and Performance Studies has relieved Associate Professor Sudip Chakrabarty from all academic responsibilities and activities following the suicide of student Munira Mahjabin Mimo.
The decision was made at a special academic committee meeting of the department on Sunday. The information was conveyed in a notice signed by department chairperson Kazi Tamanna Haque Sigma on Monday night.
The notice stated that Munira Mahjabin, a student of the department’s 2024 MA 2nd semester, has passed away, leaving everyone shocked with grief.
Following the incident, Associate Professor Sudip Chakrabarty was arrested by law enforcement. He has been sent to jail custody as a case has been registered.
Regarding the matter, Kazi Tamanna Haque Sigma told TIMES of Bangladesh, “Sudip Chakrabarty has been relieved from all types of academic activities, classes, and all examination committees of the department until the legal process is resolved.”
She said, “Now it has gone to the administration. They will look into it through the formation of an investigation committee in their own way.”
She further said, “I met with the VC sir today; he will look into the matter.”
Kazi Tamanna Haque Sigma said, “This will remain in effect as long as his case is not resolved.”
Police recovered Munira Mahjabin Mimo’s body from a house in North Badda in the capital on Sunday. Police initially believe she committed suicide by hanging herself in her own home.
Mimo was a student of the 2019-20 academic year’s Master’s program in the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies at the university. Her diary contained the names of Associate Professor Sudip Chakrabarty and a student named “Honey”.
Her suicide note read: “Sudip Sir has to be given Tk50,000. Honey and Sudip Sir, stay well. Return the gifts given by Sir.”
