A student of the University of Dhaka (DU) has been expelled over allegations of religious defamation on social media. The authorities said that investigations are also underway against two other students in connection with the same incident.
Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, the university’s proctor, confirmed the matter to Times of Bangladesh on Thursday.
The expelled student, Abrar Faiyaz, is from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, 2021–22 academic session. The other two accused are students of the IBA BBA-30 batch.
According to a letter signed by the proctor on Wednesday, Abrar Faiyaz has been expelled for six months.
The complaint filed against Abrar stated that he made “derogatory and hateful” remarks against the Muslim community on social media.
Earlier, on 26 October, a three-member investigation committee was formed to look into the allegations against Abrar Faiyaz, with Assistant Proctor A F M Mostafizur Rahman as convener.
The committee was instructed to verify the authenticity of the allegations, collect evidence, and submit a full report with recommendations within three working days. Based on the committee’s findings and the vice-chancellor’s approval, Abrar Faiyaz has been expelled from the university for six months.
Additionally, a new complaint has been received against another student over allegations of religious defamation.
Proctor Saifuddin said, “A student of the Department of Physics has been accused of making derogatory remarks about Sanatan Dharma. This matter will also be investigated, and necessary measures will be taken.”
