A student of Dhaka University has been detained by the police in the capital’s Chankharpul area for playing the historic 7th March speech of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on a sound system.
The detainee was identified as Asif Ahmed, a student of the Physics Department of Dhaka University from the 2018–19 academic session and a resident of Shahidullah Hall.
Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Moniruzzaman confirmed the detention to TIMES of Bangladesh.
“He was playing Bangabandhu’s March 7 speech. This is prohibited, which is why he has been brought in,” said Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Moniruzzaman.
When asked whether any formal complaint had been filed, the officer said the student had been taken into custody as complaints were being made.
He said a decision on further legal steps would be taken after discussion with senior officials and it was too early to provide further details.
Eyewitnesses said the student was playing the historic speech to mark March 7.
Witnesses said police officers arrived at the scene and a brief argument took place between them and the student.
Police later took him to the police station in a CNG-run autorickshaw.
The sound system operator and the owner were also taken to the police station and the sound boxes were seized from the spot.
