Dhaka University (DU) authorities have filed a case with New Market Police Station following an attack on DU students and the vandalisation of a university bus during a protest at the Science Laboratory intersection in the capital.
According to a statement from the DU Public Relations Office, the case was lodged on Thursday night.
DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan contacted home adviser shortly after the incident, seeking increased security for students.
He has also been in communication with the education adviser and other senior government officials.
The violence broke out on Thursday afternoon when students from seven colleges blocked the Science Laboratory intersection, demanding an ordinance to establish the proposed Dhaka Central University (DCU).
During the blockade, protesters stopped a bus carrying DU students to the campus. Members of the DU proctorial team and the transport manager intervened and freed the bus.
However, protesters later attacked DU students, injuring several, the statement said.
In response, DU students staged a sit-in at the Nilkhet intersection later in the evening. The vice-chancellor, treasurer, proctor, hall provosts and student leaders visited the site to express solidarity with the students and help restore calm.
On Friday, DU Treasurer Prof M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury visited the Institute of Leather Engineering and Technology (ILET) to assess security arrangements and address student concerns.
The administrator of the proposed Dhaka Central University has expressed regret over the incident. DU authorities have also written to the home secretary seeking assurances for the safety of university transport operating on city routes.
