Doctor Doom is ready for war, and the latest Avengers: Doomsday trailer makes the threat look bigger than ever. Marvel Studios unveiled the second trailer on Friday at Disney’s D23 fan convention, teasing a massive clash between the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four and the Latverian villain.
According to Variety, the two-minute trailer was introduced by Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell, who appear as Doctor Doom, Steve Rogers/Captain America and Peggy Carter. The footage opens with Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm warning Earth’s heroes about the danger posed by Doom, while the film repeatedly draws attention to the villain’s imposing new look.
The trailer then brings Doom face to face with Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards, or Mister Fantastic, amid the rubble. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor also prepares for a showdown, promising that Doom will be “begging for hell”.
Doom, however, is not intimidated. When Thor attacks with Stormbreaker, Doom blocks the blow and fires a burst of green energy at the God of Thunder.
The danger escalates when Doom summons an army of Sentinels, the classic enemies of the X-Men. He then delivers a chilling warning: “Hell answers to me, for I am Doom.”
Much of the footage echoes a trailer shown during Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con last month. The film brings together the Avengers, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts and other heroes as they unite against Doom.
Downey Jr’s return to the MCU remains one of the film’s biggest talking points. The actor, who played Iron Man until the character’s death in Avengers: Endgame, now takes on the role of Doctor Doom.
Chris Evans also returns as Steve Rogers after the character travelled back in time and left his superhero life behind in Endgame. Hemsworth returns as Thor, alongside Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Letitia Wright as Black Panther, Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier, Tom Hiddleston as Loki and Simu Liu as Shang-Chi.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps cast also returns, with Pascal as Mister Fantastic, Kirby as the Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Human Torch and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the Thing.
The Thunderbolts are also joining the battle. Florence Pugh returns as Yelena Belova, alongside David Harbour as Red Guardian, Lewis Pullman as Sentry, Wyatt Russell as US Agent and Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost.
The film will also mark the official MCU debut of several former Fox X-Men stars following Disney’s acquisition of the studio. Patrick Stewart returns as Professor Charles Xavier, with Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler and Channing Tatum as Gambit.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit cinemas on 18 December.
