Veteran actress Dolly Zohur has faced intense criticism on social media over a remark about actress Zakia Bari Momo, with some accusing her of making a colourist comment. Dolly has rejected the allegation, saying she made the remark out of affection and love, not to demean anyone.
At a recent press conference, Dolly praised Momo’s acting and called her a “Black Diamond”. The remark quickly sparked controversy on social media, with many interpreting it negatively.
Speaking to the media, Dolly said, “Artistes are like family to me, like my children. I cannot live without the shooting units and people from the media. So I always joke and speak to them affectionately. That day, while praising Momo’s acting, I said it affectionately, like I would to my own child. Momo knows how much I care for her. I call her ‘Black Diamond’ anyway.”
She claimed the issue was presented differently after a post by a young woman living abroad and subsequently spread on social media.
“People are now more interested in negative things than good ones. Many comment without understanding just to go viral. After almost 50 years in the industry, I never imagined people would look at something so narrowly. It has hurt me deeply,” Dolly said.
She also criticised those who dragged her family into the controversy, particularly comments about her son’s wife.
“What hurt me most was people talking about my daughter-in-law. She has nothing to do with the media and does not even watch dramas. She is a very polite, modest and religious girl. I usually never respond to comments on social media. But this time, I could not control my anger and had to reply,” she said.
Asked whether she regretted her remark, Dolly said, “I absolutely do not feel that I said anything wrong. My intention was not bad. It was simply the way I joke with people close to me in real life. I said it naturally, with a smile, in front of journalists. So I do not think there is anything here for me to admit as a mistake or correct.”
Addressing her critics, she added, “Those who criticise others or speak disparagingly about people only reveal their own mentality. I have received many honours in my life, including the National Film Award, but I have never been arrogant. My audience’s love is my greatest achievement. So when those same viewers make such comments without understanding, it naturally hurts.”
Dolly said colleagues and younger artistes close to her have advised her not to give unnecessary attention to the criticism. They told her that it is better not to respond to baseless comments. She now wants to follow their advice and put the controversy to rest.
