Doctor Strange is returning to the Marvel Universe with a new graphic novel that takes the Sorcerer Supreme into a surreal world of horror and the human mind, writes Collider.
Doctor Strange: Endless Nightmare follows Stephen Strange as he encounters a mysterious patient at a hospital. The man repeatedly claims that life is “nothing but the dream of a sleeping god”.
Soon, people around Strange begin suffering from insomnia. As desperation and chaos spread, the Sorcerer Supreme must enter the mind of the mysterious patient to discover the source of the crisis.
His journey takes him into the Nightmare Realm on a psychedelic trip that blends horror, fantasy and superhero elements.
Collider has released an exclusive preview of the graphic novel, written by Kevin J. Anderson, with artwork by Raúl Allén and Patricia Martín. The book is published through Abrams ComicArts’ Marvel Arts line.
Anderson said he wanted to use Doctor Strange’s ability to travel across different realms to explore a darker story inspired by the cosmic horror of H.P. Lovecraft.
“The character of Dr. Strange has access to so many bizarre realms, I wanted to introduce him to a dark and twisted Lovecraft-inspired story,” Anderson said.
He also revealed that the story features an important and popular Doctor Strange villain, along with another villain who has not appeared since Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created the character in Doctor Strange #122 in 1964.
Anderson said working within the Doctor Strange universe was an exciting experience.
Endless Nightmare also reunites Anderson, Allén and Martín after their collaboration on Dune: The Graphic Novel. Their adaptation of the science-fiction classic received praise for its visual style, with critics describing the artwork as both striking and impressive.
