BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged political leaders to avoid lies, backbiting and personal attacks in politics, saying the BNP believes in work rather than criticism.
He made the remarks while addressing a street meeting at the Kismat School ground in Nargun Union, where he is contesting as the BNP nominee for the Thakurgaon-1 constituency.
Addressing the gathering, Fakhrul referred to a political group that was previously allied with the BNP but is now contesting the election independently, saying the group was largely unfamiliar to local people in the past.
“If you do politics, please do not tell lies,” he said, calling on candidates to maintain honesty in political activities.
During his speech, the BNP leader referred to recent comments by the Charmonai Pir, who said Jamaat-e-Islami is not an Islamic party, noting that alems and ulemas have accused the group of misleading people by using the name of Islam.
Fakhrul criticised what he described as misinformation being spread among general voters and women, including claims that voting for the ‘scales’ (Dandipalla) symbol would ensure entry into heaven.
“No Muslim can believe such claims, because only Allah decides who will be granted Jannat,” he said.
The BNP Secretary General also expressed anger over a leader of another party who was seen on television and mobile videos making derogatory remarks about women.
Recalling the saying that heaven lies under the feet of mothers, Fakhrul questioned how anyone could expect to reach heaven while failing to honour and respect women or by making offensive comments about them.
He said it is impossible to perform good deeds without showing proper respect towards women.
