Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has allowed 30 third gender individuals to set up temporary shops in the Diabari area of the capital to bring the community into the city’s economic and social mainstream and improve their living standards.
The allocation letters were formally handed over to the beneficiaries at a programme held at the DNCC Nagar Bhaban on Sunday afternoon.
DNCC Administrator Mohammad Azaz attended the programme as the chief guest, while DNCC Chief Estate Officer Mohammad Shawkat Osman presided over the event.
Under the initiative, each beneficiary has been allocated 15 square feet of space at designated vacant spots on the road or footpath on the eastern side of the metro line, north of the Diabari Metro Center Station.
Speaking at the programme, Mohammad Azaz said a city becomes just only when justice is ensured for all, adding that inclusion is essential to ensure fairness and that people of all classes, professions and genders must be part of the journey to build a just city.
He said an inclusive society is built when people coexist and engage in work and business, noting that economic activities create the foundation for respect, equality and fraternity.
Referring to future plans, he said discussions would be held with the SME Foundation to gradually bring those doing business on a temporary basis under a formal business framework, with training arranged if necessary.
He added that the city corporation wants the beneficiaries to run their own businesses and become entrepreneurs so they can set examples for others.
Representing the third gender community, Shobha Sarkar thanked the DNCC administrator and said the recognition and permission would enhance their social dignity, confidence and economic capacity.
She said many members of the community earn their living on the streets due to circumstances, adding that with proper opportunities they can also engage in productive work and contribute to the country’s development.
DNCC expressed hope that the initiative would open new avenues for social recognition, self-respect and economic empowerment of the third gender community.
Among others present at the programme were DNCC Chief Executive Officer Muhammad Asaduzzaman, Chief Engineer Brigadier General Md Moin Uddin, Chief Health Officer Brigadier General Imrul Kayes Chowdhury and other officials.
