Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Monday warned city residents against falling victim to fraudulent SMS messages circulating on social media platforms that falsely claim to be related to traffic fines.
In a press release issued by Media and Public Relations Division, the DMP clarified that these messages are entirely fake and urged the public not to be misled or defrauded.
According to the Traffic Division, traffic cases filed under the Road Transport Act, 2018 – specifically those caught via AI and video surveillance – follow a strict official procedure.
When a vehicle is fined, a formal letter signed by a responsible officer from the relevant traffic division or the Traffic Technical Unit is dispatched to the registered address of the vehicle owner.
The DMP emphasised that legitimate SMS notifications regarding AI or video-based traffic cases are only sent from two specific mobile numbers: 01320-042207 and 01320-042227.
Citizens were further advised that fines for traffic violations should only be paid through approved online banking platforms, such as Upay and CBL.
The DMP categorically stated that Traffic Division will never ask citizens to disclose confidential banking information, including PIN codes, passwords, or one-time passwords (OTPs).
To verify information regarding AI or video-generated traffic cases, the public is encouraged to contact Delta-3 at 01320-042207 or 01320-042227, or call the national emergency service at 999.
The DMP urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid being deceived by false information circulating on digital platforms.
