The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has deployed a large number of officers, equipped with 1,000 body-worn cameras, to ensure security during the janaza (funeral prayer) of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha.
The funeral prayer will be held at 2pm on Saturday at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, after which Hadi will be laid to rest beside the grave of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at Dhaka University.
Authorities said the deployment is intended to maintain law and order, provide a safe environment for the large number of mourners, and prevent any untoward incidents during the event.
Meanwhile, a one-day state mourning is being observed across Bangladesh in honour of Hadi. As part of the programme, the national flag is flying at half-mast at all government, semi-government, and autonomous institutions, educational institutions, as well as government and private buildings nationwide and at Bangladesh missions abroad.
Hadi was shot in the head by assailants on 12 December on Box Culvert Road, Old Paltan, Dhaka, a day after the announcement of the schedule for the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
He was initially treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later transferred to Evercare Hospital. As his condition worsened, he was airlifted to Singapore on 15 December for advanced medical care.
He passed away on Thursday night at around 9:30pm at Singapore General Hospital while undergoing treatment.
