Tottenham Hotspur full-back Djed Spence is preparing for a potential historic debut as the first male player who publicly identifies as Muslim to represent England’s senior men’s football team. The 25-year-old has been included in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia.
Spence, who has six caps for England Under-21s, described the call-up as a “blessing” and expressed excitement at the opportunity. “It’s amazing. I don’t have the words really. In the toughest moments of my life, the darkest moments, I’ve always believed that God has been by my side. It’s a big thing for me, my faith,” he said.
Despite the historic potential, Spence stressed he does not feel additional pressure due to his religion. “I just play football with a smile on my face, be happy, and the rest will take care of itself,” he said. “If I can do it, you can do it. Not just Muslim kids, any child of any faith. Put your mind to something and you can do it.”
Spence’s rise to the top tier has been gradual. After impressing in the Championship with Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest, he joined Tottenham in 2022. Initially struggling to establish himself under Antonio Conte, he spent loan spells at Rennes, Leeds United, and Genoa. It was not until December 2024 that he made his full Spurs debut, contributing to a breakthrough season that culminated in Europa League glory, including a substitute appearance in the final against Athletic Bilbao.
Reflecting on his journey, Spence highlighted the importance of resilience and mindset. “Without a strong mentality, you won’t make it to the top. I’ve got a strong mentality, especially to fight through challenges. It does feel good to prove doubters wrong,” he said.
England face Andorra at Villa Park on Saturday, 7 September, before travelling to Belgrade to play Serbia on Tuesday, 10 September. Spence hopes that his story can inspire future generations, showing that talent, determination, and faith can help overcome obstacles both on and off the pitch.
