A team from the Department of Nutrition and Food Engineering (NFE) at Daffodil International University (DIU) has emerged as champions at the 1st National Environment Fest 2026.
The competition, organised by the Barishal University Environmental Conservation Society (BUECS), was held at the University of Barishal on Saturday.
The winner, DIU Team EcoPoly, secured the top position in the national environmental contest after competing against several universities from across the country.
Their project, titled “Biodegradable Food-Grade Packaging Films from Palmyra Palm (Bacterial Nanocellulose via Fermentation),” offers a sustainable and food-grade alternative to conventional plastic packaging.
The innovation utilises bacterial nanocellulose technology developed through the fermentation of Palmyra Palm resources.
The team members include Md Mehedi Hasan, Md Rakib Shahriar, and Dewan Md Touhiduzzaman Sajib, all students of the Department of NFE. The project was supervised by Juwel Rana, Assistant Professor of the same department.
Focusing on the reduction of plastic waste, the project introduces an environmentally friendly solution to the packaging industry. This achievement underscores DIU’s ongoing commitment to fostering research, innovation, and sustainability-driven education.
