Police recovered the dismembered body of an unidentified man from the basement of a residential building in Manda area of Mugda in the capital on Sunday.
The victim’s body, which had been severed into seven distinct parts and wrapped in plastic sheets, was found around 1:30pm at a property situated on Abdul Karim Road.
According to Md Jalal Uddin, inspector (Investigation) of Mugda Police Station, the victim’s head remains missing.
Preliminary forensic assessments suggest the individual was murdered around six days ago at a different location.
Authorities believe the remains were subsequently transported to and abandoned in the basement.
The body was in a state of decomposition when police, acting on tips from local residents, arrived at the scene.
Acting on information provided by local residents, police recovered the decomposed body from the basement and sent it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem, the officer said.
While the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) attempted to identify the deceased through fingerprint analysis at the site, the effort was unsuccessful.
Investigators are now reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area to identify potential suspects and track the movement of the remains.
