Popular Bangladeshi band Souls and rapper DJ Maruf have released a new collaborative song titled ‘Boka’, featuring musical arrangement by members of the band Souls.
The track, released on Thursday across YouTube channels of Souls, its frontman Partha Barua and DJ Maruf, explores the growing dependence on mobile phones and its perceived negative impact on society.
In the music video, Partha Barua appears in a protagonist role while DJ Maruf is portrayed as an antagonist, adding a narrative twist to the visual presentation.
DJ Maruf wrote the lyrics for the song and also contributed vocals, including the rap sections. The music arrangement was handled by members of Souls, while the music video was directed by Shubroto Sarkar.
Partha Barua said DJ Maruf consistently tries to bring something new through his work, combining entertainment with social messages.
“He is always trying to do something new. His songs carry both entertainment and awareness messages. Boka is one such song, where we have tried to show how excessive use of mobile phones can lead to harmful consequences,” he said.
He added that when DJ Maruf proposed the project, he agreed without hesitation and also brought in members of Souls for the arrangement, which he said was a first for him in such a collaboration.
DJ Maruf said working with Partha Barua and Souls had been a long-standing dream.
“I have always been a fan of Partha Barua and Souls. This collaboration has fulfilled a dream I have had for two decades,” he said.
He added that the success of the song would be measured by its impact on listeners.
Meanwhile, members of Souls continue to remain active with live performances and stage shows. The band completed 50 years in 2023 and has since been regularly releasing new music and performing both at home and abroad.
