The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has solved the murder mystery of bKash trader Atikul Islam in Fatullah, Narayanganj, two and a half years after the crime, arresting six people involved in the killing, officials said on Sunday.
Among those arrested, two have given confessional statements in court admitting their guilt, PBI Narayanganj District Police Superintendent Md Mostafa Kamal Rashed confirmed in a notification.
Atikul Islam worked as a Flexiload and bKash shopkeeper. Ali Samrat, who worked next to his shop, borrowed Tk50,000 from him via bKash on the morning of 9 November 2023, with a promise to return it that very night.
When Atikul asked for the money back after closing his shop, Samrat told him to come to Aliganj Rail Line Bazar. After going there with a friend, Atikul could not be found.
On the morning of 11 November, locals saw his body floating in the pond of Haji Shahabuddin’s fish farm adjacent to Aliganj Rail Line and informed police. A murder case was filed at Fatullah Police Station.
PBI took over the investigation and on May 13 arrested Md Shanto Hossain from the Aliganj Bazar area. During interrogation, he confessed to the murder and provided important information about other accused.
He was sent to court on 13 May, where he gave a confessional statement under Section 164 admitting to the killing.
On 14 May, following raids in various areas, PBI arrested Md Ahad Ali, Rubel, Ashik, Jummon, and Jahid Hasan Shubho. They were interrogated on a three-day police remand.
After the remand ended on Sunday, Ahad Ali gave a confessional statement under Section 164 in court admitting to the murder, officials said.
Further legal proceedings against the accused are underway.
