Dipen Dewan, lawmaker and former minister of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, has issued a call for peace and communal harmony following his recent resignation from the ministry.
Addressing the residents of the three hill districts – Rangamati, Khagrachari, and Bandarban – Dewan acknowledged the deep emotions, concerns, and reactions his resignation has sparked among political colleagues, well-wishers, and the public.
He urged all Pahari, Bengali, and other communities within the Hill Tracts to remain calm, exercise patience, and maintain law, order, and harmony.
Dewan specifically cautioned against falling for provocations or confusion, stressing that the region must maintain an environment of mutual respect, empathy, and friendship rather than moving towards conflict.
“I believe the Chittagong Hill Tracts belong to us all,” Dewan said, adding that the responsibility for the region’s development, stability, and peace is shared by everyone.
He expressed his expectation for the bonds of brotherhood and mutual trust to be further strengthened between the Pahari and Bengali populations.
Reflecting on his political heritage, Dewan proudly recalled that his father served as an adviser to former president Ziaur Rahman, whose patriotism and commitment to the people serve as his primary political inspiration.
He noted that he joined BNP under the affection and guidance of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia and has remained a dedicated worker of the party since the beginning of his political life.
Dewan sought to clarify his political future, stating unequivocally that the BNP is the home of his ideological beliefs.
He pledged to dedicate the remainder of his life to the party, its ideals, and the welfare of the people, asserting that his loyalty and commitment would remain intact regardless of personal or political circumstances. “I will never leave this party,” he declared.
Emphasising that the welfare of the people is more important than any individual, the lawmaker called for unity in the interest of peace and development. He remarked that while there may be differences of opinion and competition, these should not lead to division or conflict.
Expressing full confidence in the leadership of Honourable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Dewan stated his desire to advance under this leadership to build a “New Bangladesh”. He reaffirmed with conviction that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party is his “final destination”.
Closing his address with the slogans “Bangladesh First” and “Bangladesh Zindabad,” he extended his sincere greetings and love to all citizens.
Dewan officially submitted his resignation letter to the Prime Minister on Monday, 1 June. In his letter, the outgoing minister explained that he has been suffering from various physical complications since assuming his responsibilities.
He further noted that his illness had led to difficulties in properly carrying out the regular activities of the ministry.
