Diogo Jota, who tragically lost his life in a car accident in Spain at the age of 28, will be remembered as one of the most intelligent and hardworking forwards of his generation. In a career full of goals, silverware and selflessness, Jota rose from humble beginnings in Portugal to become a key figure for both Liverpool and his national team.

Born in Massarelos in 1996, Jota began his professional journey with Pacos de Ferreira. His talent soon drew attention beyond Portugal and he signed with Atletico Madrid, although it was at Wolverhampton Wanderers that he truly made his name. Joining in 2017, he was instrumental in Wolves’ promotion to the Premier League and quickly adapted to life in the top flight.

Liverpool signed him in 2020 and he wasted no time making an impact. His debut season included a memorable hat-trick against Atalanta and a series of big-game goals that proved vital to Jurgen Klopp’s side. Across 182 appearances for the Reds, he scored 65 goals and helped the club lift the Premier League title, the FA Cup and the League Cup.

For Portugal, Jota earned 49 caps and scored 14 goals. He played an important role in the national team’s UEFA Nations League victories in 2021 and again in 2025, just weeks before his untimely death.

He was known not just for his football but for his character. Teammates spoke of a quiet leader who always gave everything, whether in training or on match day. Fans loved his honesty, tireless running and knack for scoring in big moments.

Jota had recently married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, and was a proud father of three. What should have been the beginning of a new chapter in his personal life has instead left the football world grieving a life and career cut short.
