Dilip Roy, president of Biplobi Chhatra Maitree, has been named coordinator of the Ganatantrik Chhatra Jote (Democratic Student Alliance) for the next two months.

The unanimous decision was made at a meeting of Pragatisheel Chhatra Jotes (Progressive student organisations) in Bangladesh, held at Madhur Canteen, Dhaka University, under the banner of the Ganatantrik Chhatra Jote.

The session was presided over by outgoing coordinator Amal Tripura, president of the Greater Chittagong Hill Tracts Student Council, according to a press release.

The meeting was attended by leaders of major student groups, including Tamjid Haider Chonchol (Bangladesh Chhatra Union), Salman Siddiqui (Samajtantrik Chhatra Front), Shahedul Haque Nishan (Ganatantrik Chhatra Council), Jabir Ahmed Jubel (general secretary, Biplobi Chhatra Maitree), and Naeem Uddin (vice-president, Biplobi Chhatra-Jubo Andolan).

Student leaders expressed deep concern over the interim government’s trade agreements with the United States, alleging they compromise national interests and foster economic dependency.

They cautioned that these deals could negatively affect critical sectors such as pharmaceuticals and poultry, leaving Bangladesh vulnerable to neo-colonial economic control.

The leaders also condemned the joint US-Israeli military actions in Iran, describing the attacks on civilians and leadership as violations of international law, motivated by control over energy resources and trade routes rather than the promotion of democracy or human rights. They voiced solidarity with global movements opposing US imperialism.

Additionally, the participants raised concerns about domestic issues, including killings, sexual violence, harassment of local communities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts by security forces, and the marginalisation of ethnic and religious minorities in the region.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue coordinated efforts among student organisations to address both national and international challenges affecting Bangladesh and its youth.
