Dhaka residents revel in Eid festivities, crowd entertainment venues

After a month of fasting, Muslims in Bangladesh are celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest religious festival of the faith. On this joyous day, the capital, Dhaka, has taken on a festive look.

The celebrations began early in the morning with prayers at Eidgahs, followed by embraces and greetings. Soon after, Dhaka residents poured into the streets, flocking to entertainment centers with their families.

By midday, crowds thronged the National Zoo in Mirpur, the National Museum in Shahbagh, and the Hatirjheel area. People of all ages from children to the elderly ventured out, seeking relief from the monotony of daily life.

At the zoo, Roni Hossain, who came with his wife and two children, said, “Work pressure keeps me away from family most of the year. This Eid, I didn’t go to my hometown. I came here to give my children some joy.”

Ramna Park and Suhrawardy Udyan also buzzed with activity, as visitors relaxed under the trees, chatting and enjoying the greenery. Young men and women dressed in colourful panjabis and sarees, while many captured the festive moments with group selfies.

Food courts and restaurants across Dhaka, especially in Dhanmondi, Khilgaon, and Banani, saw heavy crowds of food lovers eager to try special Eid menus and offers, often waiting long hours with friends.

Families also gathered near the Parliament building in Agargaon, some for-leisure walks, others for friendly get-togethers.

Rafi Hossain Dhruvo, a private university student, said, he spent the morning with family and the afternoon with friends. He said, “Many of my school friends are busy with studies, jobs, or abroad. We rarely get time together. Today we finally managed to meet up.”

The festive crowds caused traffic jams in several areas, including Gulistan and Agargaon. Police sources confirmed that security arrangements were in place across the city.

At a press briefing, Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s acting commissioner Md Sarwar said, “There is no security threat, but our intelligence agencies are monitoring. We are fully prepared to ensure safety during Eid.”
