BNP leaders, activists and local residents protested by blocking the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway in Tongi demanding that the Gazipur-6 constituency be retained.
The blockade caused severe tailbacks on the highway. Traffic returned to normal nearly one hour later after the protesters left the road.
Around 9:30am, locals formed a human chain at Tongi College Gate in Gazipur protesting a High Court verdict that cancelled the Election Commission’s gazette on the Gazipur-6 seat.
The human chain later turned into a protest, with demonstrators blocking the highway and burning tyres.
The agitators demanded the reinstatement of the Election Commission’s gazette, citing the large number of voters in the constituency.
They also called for the resignation of Justice Shashanka Shekhar Sarkar and announced tougher programmes if the writ is not rejected within seven days.
