Former vice chairman of BNP Shaukat Mahmood has been detained by the Detective Branch in front of his residence in the city’s Aftab Nagar area.
Confirming the matter to TIMES of Bangladesh, DB chief Md Shafiqul Islam said, “He has been taken in for questioning in a case filed with the Ramna police station under the anti-terrorism act.”
Shaukat had served as the president of National Press Club and Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ).
Mahmood, who had earlier held the position of vice chairman in the BNP, was removed from the role in March 2023 following accusations of activities deemed to be against the party’s interests.
In April this year, a new political platform named Janata Party Bangladesh (People’s Party Bangladesh) began ints journey under the leadership of actor and road safety advocate Ilias Kanchan. Mahmood was appointed as the party’s secretary general.
