Daniel Radcliffe may forever be associated with Harry Potter, but he is ready to hand over the wand to the next generation. Although he left the role over a decade ago, the cultural impact of the Harry Potter franchise remains as strong as ever.
In 2023, HBO announced a series adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s iconic novels and in May, 11-year-old Dominic McLaughlin was cast as the new Harry Potter.
In a recent appearance on Good Morning America, Radcliffe revealed that he reached out to McLaughlin with a letter of support. “I know some people working on the production, so I wrote to Dominic and sent him a letter. He sent me a very sweet note back,” Radcliffe shared with hosts Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos.
Radcliffe said he felt it was important to offer some words of encouragement, but also emphasized, “I do not want to be a specter in the lives of these children at all.” His letter was simple yet heartfelt: “I hope you have the best time, and even better than I did. I had a great time, but I hope you have an even better one.”
At the time Radcliffe began filming the first Harry Potter movie, McLaughlin was the same age, just 11. Now 36, Radcliffe reflected, “I look at pictures of him and the other kids, and I just want to hug them. They seem so young. It’s crazy to think I was doing all of that at their age, but it’s also incredibly sweet. I hope they’re having a wonderful time.”
McLaughlin, alongside Arabella Stanton (Hermione Granger) and Alastair Stout (Ron Weasley), will form the new trio at the heart of the series. Other well-known names joining the adult cast include John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.
Though Radcliffe has expressed nothing but gratitude for his role as the boy with the lightning bolt scar, he’s made it clear that he’s not interested in returning to the Wizarding World. When asked if he would ever consider a cameo or supporting role in the new TV series, he replied, “I don’t think so. They very wisely want a clean break and I’m not sure it would work for us to do anything in it.”
