After the Durga Puja holiday, the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (Cucsu) election campaign has gained momentum with political activities on the campus.
Vibrant scenes of campaigners distributing leaflets, engaging with students, and even exchanging greetings with rivals were seen on the Chittagong University (CU) campus on Sunday.
Shafayet Hossain, a general secretary candidate from the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal-backed panel, and other candidates distributed leaflets among students to seek votes in the elections slated for 15 October.
The lively atmosphere on the campus reflects growing enthusiasm among candidates and students.
Election campaigns were slowed down during the university’s closure for classes and examinations from September 28, but following the holidays, both the presence of students and candidates has surged on the campus, intensifying the electoral excitement.
Ayesha Siddika Mishu, a fourth-year student from English Department, said, “It’s really nice to see this lively election environment. I hope this peaceful atmosphere continues until the voting day. We will cast our votes for candidates based on their past and present activities.”
Meanwhile, “Sarbabhoum Shikkharthi Oikya”, a non-partisan coalition formed by general students, announced its 22-point election manifesto at a press conference in front of the CUCSU building on Sunday noon.
Saeed Mohammad, assistant general secretary (AGS) candidate from the panel, read out the manifesto.
During the poll campaign, Vice-President (VP) candidate Tawseef Muttaqi Chowdhury said, “We aim to address various university issues by effectively utilising university funds and collaborating with both government and private organisations.”
They have pledged that students will be able to submit complaints or feedback anonymously, which must be resolved within 48 hours. CUCSU will be incorporated into the academic calendar, and new elections must be held within 90 days of each term’s end.
The inclusion of student representatives – both males and females – in the proctorial body. Establishment of a central student database and introduction of an online payment system.
The panel also promised live shuttle train tracking, better accommodation facilities, improved medical services, enhanced research opportunities, academic seminars, reading circles, and cultural activities.
