The Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences (IFESCU) at Chittagong University has won the “National Environment Award 2025” in recognition of its outstanding contributions to environmental education and awareness.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change announced the award through an official gazette notification on 7 June. IFESCU was selected in the ‘Environmental Education and Awareness’ category at the institutional level, reflecting its long-standing role in forestry education, environmental research, and promoting public awareness nationwide.
Recipients of the award will receive a two-tola 22-carat gold medal, a crest, a certificate, and a cheque for Tk 50,000.
Professor Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain, Director of the Institute, said, “Receiving this award is a great honour for both Chittagong University and the Institute. It recognises our sustained contributions to environmental education and research and inspires us to further promote environmental conservation across the country.”
IFESCU has been offering academic and research programmes in forestry and environmental science at undergraduate, postgraduate, MPhil, and PhD levels. This year marks the 50th anniversary of its forestry education programme and the 25th anniversary of its environmental science curriculum.
Beyond academics, the institute has played a key role in campus environmental conservation. Its afforestation programme, running since 1983, has transformed nearly 600 acres into green spaces. Additionally, the institute established the country’s first experimental and educational Miyawaki Forest with active participation from students.
