Extrajudicial killings carried out in the name of “crossfire” during the Awami League government will be prosecuted at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam announced on Tuesday.

Speaking to journalists at his office, he said the incidents follow a similar pattern, making them systematic and widespread attacks, which qualify as crimes under the ICT law.

“We are currently compiling statistics on all crossfire incidents across the country and collecting copies of all related cases,” Aminul Islam said. “After verifying these cases, those suitable for trial will be brought before the tribunal for prosecution.”

The chief prosecutor further stated that the killings were carried out according to a common design. “Those who opposed the government’s policies or had differences with local leaders were targeted. Police were used to carry out the killings, often taking victims to different locations and staging arms recovery operations before executing them,” he said.

According to Aminul Islam, the crossfire operations represented a meticulous and coordinated plan by the government, highlighting the widespread nature of these extrajudicial killings.
